How to Get a Raise by Doing Your Job

I bet that got your attention!

I am going to give you a big secret, that really shouldn’t be a secret at all.

When you start a job, you go through so many different emotions: good, bad, indifferent and somewhere in-between. You come home happy you took the job, perhaps frustrated at times and may even experience thoughts of, ‘what the hell was I thinking’. It happens to all of us. Even me with starting my own company.

When you start a new job though, I want you to journal for 6 months, everyday you are at work. Yes - you read that correctly.

When you get into your car, bus, train, or walk away from your desk at home, I want you to take one minute and write down what you accomplished for that day.

Even if it is something simple such as; got to work on time, showed up ready to work, finished a project on time, before it was due or even if it was late, but under budget. Any accomplishment for the day.

Write it down. You will get a sense of your own accomplishments, and mostly, when it comes time for that raise, you have proof of what you contributed to the company for the last 6 months. If they only do raises yearly, write it down for the whole year. And don’t stop. Once an employer see’s you are doing this, they may just ask everyone to do so. Managers don’t see everything, and you do not want them to, a bit creepy if you ask me; let alone a micro-manager is not well received.

So, this is my special secret to you all for you to get the money you so deserve, and keep track of your wins. Plus if you need to improve, you have notes on where you may have fallen short. You are your biggest critic, make sure you get paid your value when you do a good job. If you do a great job, make sure that raise is in line with your efforts and intelligence.

You can thank me when you get that well-earned, and well-deserved raise ;)
