Some Things Just Don’t Change

I spend time reading articles and postings on LinkedIn. I feel it is my responsibility to keep up with today’s market in hiring, any new trends that are happening and so forth. One that gets me befuddled every time is the way people hire or say what works now instead of what used to work.

I gotta tell you my friends, some things just don’t change.

Yes, networking is a great way to get you in the door, even get you the job! In realty, not everyone can network, knows how to network, or feels comfortable networking. If you only used networking for a new job, can you imagine how much more the competition would be? If everyone reached out to the same person who posted the job, then that person would be flooded with emails telling them how wonderful they are. It is just like getting flooded with resumes but with another thing to screen from.

Now, if you happen to have a personal connection, that is a different ball game altogether. That would be the secret sauce. But in reality, how many of you are connected to the person that posted the job or have someone at that company that can get you in the door?? Odds are slim.

So, this brings me back to the old fashion way of hiring. You still need a resume, you still need to know what you are looking for, what you offer and what makes you different than the other 100 people looking at the same role. (Side note, about 60% of those 100 are just sending out their resume for unemployment purposes).

So, when you read articles and postings that say the only way to get a new job is by networking, don’t be fooled or feel helpless! The old fashioned way still works and always will. Eyes still need to read your resume and hiring managers still need to meet you.
