Employers Responsibility
Employers, do you know all the different kind of responsibilities you are in charge of?
Do you know that it is up to you to set the tone of another person’s success?
Do you know that others look up to you and want to be just like you?
Or that it is a part of your role to determine why there are those that don’t respect you?
As a hiring authority, manager, supervisor, mentor, or trainer, how others succeed in the company is directly related to you, and how you show up.
While this concept may be new to you, consider this an opportunity to reflect on your responsibilities as an employer. When you hire, do you reflect on how this person will add value, character, intelligence to your company? Can you visualize them as part of your company? And if you so, how do they fit in with work culture, ethics and character?
With every interview, you have an opportunity to take a deep dive into your candidate, as well as the position you are wanting to fill. During the interview process, are you taking time to not just write notes, but thoroughly reflect on them? Is a pros and cons list a part of your hiring process? Does every interviewee get asked the same questions with the same approach (i.e. tone, body language, curiosity, etc.)?
Take this time to reflect on your approach as an employer, and how you are deciphering who will best fill the position based on how you are presenting the interviewing process. If every interview is different, the results will in fact, be different.
Did you know you can ask the same question, only with different reasons, attitude, and personality according to the person you are interviewing? They say that the applicant should “mirror” the person interviewing them. (don’t get me started on how REALLY PROBLEMATIC that could be); but what about adhering to the person YOU are interviewing?
How do you get the best out of each person you interview, if you don’t treat each person as they are; an individual?
There are so many companies, coaches, and consultants out there for the applicant, helping them interview for the job they want. As an employer, if you don’t ask the right questions, treat individuals as they are, you are the one failing your company, not the individual.
Responsibility in hiring is THE # 1 responsibility you have to your company. Make sure you do it with honesty, sincerity, and integrity.
