I Want It All, And I Want It Now

“I WANT IT ALL, I WANT IT ALL AND I WANT IT NOW!!”

Have you ever read all the lyrics to Queen’s Song, I Want it All? It is a pretty powerful message. The problem is such, can you have it all? In my opinion, you can come pretty close, but having it all means you have nothing to strive for. What is it that you really want in a new career? What are willing to forgive, not give up, but forgive, at least for now?  If you don’t know, you need to, and soon.

One of my favorite questions I ask my clients: “WHAT ARE YOUR 3 MUST HAVES TO ACCEPT A NEW ROLE?”

And 80% say the same thing:

  1. Money

  2. Work Life Balance

  3. Remote work

Good luck with that!!

My breakdown on these must haves is the following:

MONEY- Ask for what you value yourself at. Thankfully, in most states, starting in 2023, any published role must have the salary posted. So, if the salary range fits your needs, you apply, if they don’t and you think you are going to be able to negotiate your way to a higher salary, think long and hard about that. They don’t have to. They posted their budget, you applied!

WORK LIFE BALANCE - It is up to you. Sounds wrong? But is it?  You get paid for working 40 hours a week, for the most part, right? When they offer you the job and you accept, than that is what you work. Of course there are exceptions at times, but for the most part, the rest is up to you. That’s right. It is up to you to have a work life balance, not the company.

So, how do you go about it? You tell them. You don’t ask, you tell them upon your acceptance of the job offer. Miss Employer, I do accept the offer and I plan to always give you my best 40 hours a week. Even if the role is exempt, unless they specify that they expect you to work 50 hours a week, if is up to you to say yes or no.

REMOTE WORK ONLY - Well, most won’t like my response, but I feel the need to share it with you anyways. Everyone wants remote, for the most part, but the competition is on over-load from that and your chances of getting remote are not as high as everyone wishes. The more you are open to hybrid and in the office, the higher your chances of getting hired and being more competitive you will find. The job market is not going to go 100% remote, ever. We have too many roles that need to be in the office. And after a few years, you just may get tired of looking at the same walls over and over and you can only zoom for so long. What is so wrong with being in an office? What is so wrong speaking with another human, face to face? Hybrid is the solution, but once again, not all roles can be filled by doing so.

In summary, You need to pick your battles and figure out what is important to you and what is not.

You make the decisions for your career, no one else. What is your decision and what are you willing to forgive?
