It’s Time to Go Back to Work

As the pandemic storm starts to wane and we can start to see blue skies once again, the talk of the town is EMPLOYMENT.

Companies are hiring, mom-and-pop shops are opening up and we can start to sit inside and outside at our favorite hangouts, OR CAN WE?

They may be open, but they don’t have staff to help? Unemployment checks are just as big or bigger, so why go back?

Major companies need people back in their seats, and they need people to help their company get back up to speed. Qualified candidates don’t apply or accept the role, and why should they? The pandemic isn’t over yet.

This is the cyclicality we’re faced with right now.  Finding work is hard. Hiring is hard. It really doesn’t have to be that way.

A few things to consider on both sides of the conference room table:

Concerns from Potential Employees:

  • There is no daycare availability to help care for their small children.

  • Some schools are still not open, and someone needs to be home with the kids and help with online learning.

  • Unemployment checks are keeping food on the table and paying the bills, so what’s the rush?

  • Fear of catching COVID keeps people working from home rather than risking coming into the office.

I empathize, understand and respect these reasons why one wouldn’t want to go back to work, or worse yet, cannot do so because of the reasons mentioned above. For those that can go back to work but choose not to do so, please remember that unemployment checks will run out, and when this happens the competition for jobs will be out of control. The hiring process for companies large & small could take months.

Get in front of the rush while you can. Take initiative and get out there. The probability of you finding the role you really want is very, very good right now!

To the Employer: Why? Why are you waiting so long to hire? If you find someone that you like, trust can do the job, and fit in culturally, Take Action! Stop thinking there could be more people to compare them to. Part of the problem that is happening now (and to be honest, has always been a problem), is that employers wait too long to hire the person they really wanted in the first place.

When you are decisive, you get your first pick. When you are slow, you get second best…maybe.

To the jobless and the people who need to hire them: Stop being afraid. It is still scary out there and I get it, I live it just like you. Now is the time to get out there and take action, still being safe, but just a bit bolder than your competition. Employers stop waiting and hire. Make sure all your job descriptions are up to date and not outdated from 3 years ago. Our old normal did not work, we are moving to a new ABNORMAL and with enough logic and common sense from the rest of us, we just might be able to move forward and start growing and nurturing our country once again.
