People are quitting, not communicating and employers need to hire…
So, here it is. What is going on in today’s world, in 2022-and we just started!
Communication skills are a dying breed, employers have a need to hire, but won’t, and 4.5Million people quit their job in November, 2021 (source, CNN). Insane, right? Why would all these people quit their jobs? Let’s throw in another dilemma, shall we? Why aren’t owners seeing this problem and doing something about it?
From my perspective:
Communications use to be one of the reasons a company would hire you. How you present yourself, your body language, tone, usage of the English language, written and spoken. Now, with everyone wanting and thinking that working from home is the new age of working, we lose people and skills all at the same time. If you don’t work with others, and all you do is work from a computer and at times over the phone and zoom, you lose so much of what we all have been taught starting from Kindergarten. People skills. The number one reason people get hired: Their people skills. But if we don’t use them, we lose them; just like any other skill we have learned, retained and use.
Now, bring that forward to what is happening in our states, and you have a mess!!! I want to work from home, I want to work my hours, my pace and in the luxury of my own home. Wanting, wanting, and wanting more is not necessarily a good thing. Again, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I get why people want to work from home, but won’t they lose out in the long run, themselves? Who they are, why they do what they do and how they do it? Weren’t they all taught in some form and fashion that working with others is the way to be successful? To be collaborative, to listen and engage with others?
If people continue to quit because they think there is more and better options out there then to work in an office, think again people! Not all of you will get your way, that is just reality. Numbers don’t lie. And look at the facts; when a company post an opening, normally, hence the word normally, they would get over 100 resumes; that is, in a world from the past. But even now, I get clients from everywhere saying no one is hiring me. I send out my resume and I get nothing, even the good resumes don’t get replies.
Why? If employers are in need to hire, why won’t they reach out and hire? What is stopping them? If they don’t offer WFH, they get less inquires in today’s world. Guess what, YOU CAN’T HAVE IT YOUR WAY ALL THE TIME.
If a company is asking you to work in their building, do it. If they say you can work remote, ahhhh the competition just got harder. If applicants are responding to your need to hire, HIRE THEM!!
Stop thinking you are going to get everything you want. If 4.5 million people quit their jobs, that is 4.5 Million people that at some point, well at least 3 Million people will still have to find new jobs, right? Not everyone is wealthy enough to support themselves, let alone a family. We need to work to keep our economy going. We need to be real in our expectations that we can’t have it all. We can come close, but 100% is just not feasible. Reality is just that, real!!
So, if you need to hire, by golly hire someone already. There are enough people looking who want to get hired, need to get hired and will do what it takes to get hired. If you are looking to get hired, stop pigeon-holing yourself and trying to get 100% of what you think you should be offered, remote or not-it just doesn’t work that way. And mostly, if we all work from home, our communication skills will literally go out the door. It is bad enough that our younger generation is set on keeping their head down in their phones as much as they can; do we all have to start bending our heads?
This is not a rant; this is honesty. Pointing out that we all can’t leave our jobs, we all need to continue to communicate with each other and not every company will offer the availability to work from home. (don’t get me started on the roles that can’t even work from home at all!!)
All I am asking is this from you: Think about what you offer and how you can offer more. Stop asking for the world and settle for a piece of the cake instead. Cake is yummy and you don’t have to travel very far to eat it!!
