Perfectionism in Hiring Trends: Employers & Candidates Are Expecting Too Much

After reading five posts this morning on what is going on in today’s world of job-posting-and-not-hiring, and not counting the fact that all of my clients feel the same way, allow me to share my perspective…

I have been a recruiter for nearly 32 years, and have recruited through four recessions and one pandemic. This year, however: It is questionable. My take, my honest and humble perspective? Here’s the rub:

Employers are so scared, not confident, and expect way to much all at the same time.

Employers want to be competitive with the bigger companies, even though they should not even try.  Employers want it all, just like all the candidates who are looking for new roles, they want it all.

So, the breakdown:

  1. If you are a qualified candidate for the role between 60-85%, apply. If you are not, DON’T

  2. If you find an individual that has at least 75-85% of what your needs and wants are, and their personality fits, HIRE THEM

  3. Never throw out your resume to see if it sticks. IT WON’T.

  4. Always apply with PURPOSE, otherwise you are wasting everyone’s time

This market is daunting and I am not the only recruiter saying this, thankfully!

If you have sent out over 100 resumes in the span of just one month, are you doing yourself a favor by playing the numbers game (so you think), or are you doing yourself a dis-service and playing the spaghetti game? If it sticks, great, but if it doesn’t, and you just leave it on the wall, by the time you remove it, you have also removed your drywall, and you now need to cover it up!! (And yes, that is a real thing, don’t try it)

You will see change soon enough, for that I am certain. Will this carry over next year? Who in the heck knows. But I do feel, whole-heartedly that change is at the ready, change needs to happen and change needs to be embraced and not challenged.

Have questions, concerns, what if’s and more? Hit me up.
