Accountability Check: Easy & Necessary Habits Done Consistently
Why is being consistent such an important Habit to have in your life?
Why do you need to make sure you are consistent with how you work?
Because when you have a home office and work for yourself, you don’t have colleagues to help you remember. You don’t have others that you can rely on to help you through a project. You have yourself. And you like it that way, or you wouldn’t have gone into business for yourself. Think about it: If you ever worked in the public or private sector, you had others around you. You had someone else to rely on, to speak with, to share ideas with. And now, you have yourself. So, for you to be successful the only person you can and have to count on is yourself.
So, let’s look how being and staying consistent can only improve your work habits. Consistency is a patterned behavior.
So, for this example, I am using the adage, “write it down” as being a consistent behavior for your company.
Can you imagine making sure you never forget what you are supposed to do! I was shown how to write down my agenda, my task, and needs every day at work on a calendar for 11 years at my first job as a recruiter. (we didn’t use computers back then, and yes, I know I just aged myself, but there is a point here, I promise). I got so consistent at writing things down that I started to include what I needed to get done at home. I was also and still am, consistent at using a calendar.
Consistency sounds easy, but can you imagine, (as I know many of you have) having “the one great idea” and just telling yourself that you will remember it the next morning? And poof, your great idea is gone. You didn’t write it down. If you were in the habit and consistent about putting down your thoughts, ideas, and must do’s daily, can you imagine where you might be now with that one great idea?
So, let me share this one habit with you: Be consistent in what you do, how you do it, and why you do it every day. I am not saying change is bad; on the contrary, I am saying in life, we get messy, we get lost, and we get busy. Your habits can anchor you when things go sideways. Writing down your thoughts (and more) is just one way of showing how consistency in your life can change you, as well as consistently make you more successful running your company the way you want it to be ran. I believe that if you are consistent with a few easy and necessary habits in your daily life, like writing it all down, you will also find a bit more balance to you as well.
